With the Watergate scandal President Richard Nixon introduced a new phrase into the American lexicon. Henceforth all scandals would have the word “gate” appended to them. Since then we have had Monicagate, Iran Contragate, Nannygate, Troopergate, etc. Even pseudo scandals such as Climategate were not safe from the gate moniker.
However Nixon was an underachiever compared to George W. Bush. Bush’s presidency was so riddled with incompetence that he has provided future generations with an abundance of benchmarks by which to measure a President’s failings. We are already seeing this as the gulf disaster is being mentioned as “Obama’s Katrina”. (However, when I think of the gulf disaster I think of the Iraq War, yet another benchmark provided by Bush.)
This little snippet from Jon Stewart highlights some of the new phrases being used to compare Bush and Obama. If you’re not a big Stewart fan, fast forward until about 4:50 into the clip.
