A recent Fox News headline boldly declared: Boehner: It’s “Armageddon”, Health Care Bill Will “Ruin Our Country” Really John? Armageddon? It will ruin this country? Come on man, isn’t that just a teensy-weensy bit strong? This country has survived slavery, two World Wars, the Great Depression and George W. Bush but providing access to health care for millions of American will “ruin our country”? Likes its ruined Canada, the UK and France? Seems a bit Chicken Little-ish to me. I tried to remember the last time the Republican Party was so dead set against a Democratic initiative.
In 1993 Clinton passed a deficit reduction package, also known as a, (can I say this on the Web?) tax increase. Newt Gingrich had this to say about the bill:
“The tax increase will kill jobs and lead to a recession, and the recession will force people out of work and onto unemployment and actually increase the deficit.”
For those of you who may have been unconscious during the 1990s we then had the longest peace-time economic expansion in our history. Interest rates went to then record lows as the bond markets realized the government was serious about attacking the deficit.
The Republicans consistently predict dire scenarios when we have a Democratic President knowing that no one is really going to go back to see what they had to say about it at the time. Well we just did. Newt was wrong then just as Boehner is wrong now.
