Listening to Republicans complain about Obama’s use of reconciliation for health reform, you’d think it had never been used before, even though the Republicans have used it far more times than Democrats. Personally I think the Democrats are justified to use reconciliation, they are after all the majority party. But at this point it is probably too late. They have been boxed into a corner by the Republican Party’s superior media skills. Reconciliation, even though it requires a majority, has been portrayed as some underhanded way of putting one over on the American people. Matthew Yglesias writes about the successful conservative media coup on this issue.
Shakespeare never wrote more truer words when Cassius said “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,
But in ourselves, that we are underlings”.
The more Americans allow the media to distort political discourse and to actually believe the pundintry and muckraking is to be taken for fact, the more Americans will vote against their own self interests.
Rome did not fall from outsiders but from within.
