At the recent Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) meeting Mitt Romney spoke of Democrats as being Neo-Monarchists. I guess with the good names already taken by other speakers– Marxists, Leninists, Nazis, America haters, Trotskyites (!), Queers, Jihadists, etc.–Mitt had to settle on the quaint but archaic neo-Monarchists. Say what?I had to double-check my calendar. Yup it’s 2010.
For a second I thought maybe we had travelled back to 1776 and we were trying to free ourselves from the shackles of mad King George. Did he really say neo-Monarchists? I’m not even sure what that is. Let’s take Mitt at face value and assume he means it, which is a big assumption with Mittens.
Set aside their politics for a moment (I know that’s difficult, this is a political blog after all) and take a look at the last two Democratic presidents. Bill Clinton’s father died in a car accident before Clinton was even born. Obama had little contact with his absentee father who also died while Obama was a child. It’s hard to see what monarchical role their fathers played.
Let’s compare that to the last two Republican presidents. George W. Bush shared most of a name with, and was the son of, a former president while his father, George H. W. Bush, was himself the son of a former United States Senator, Prescott Bush. And let’s not forget that still waiting in the wings out there is another Bush scion, Jeb. That’s a lot of Bushes. Monarchy indeed.
It is a bizarro world to the nth degree for Mitt Romney–the privileged son of former three-term Michigan Governor and presidential candidate George Romney–to claim that the Democrats are the party of monarchy. In Mitt’s world up is down and white is black.
When I see Mitt speak before CPAC he reminds me of the nerdy kid at school who wants to hang out with the cool kids but just doesn’t know what to say to fit in. He never ceases to amaze.
Now I have nothing against Mitt’s coming from prize breed stock. Good for him. Just don’t try to come across as the common man when you do.
(I was going to insert video of his speech here but honestly the guy is so hard to take.)
